TIRUPATI: In perhaps the first such episode in the recent political history of Andhra Pradesh, Kadapa MP and YSRCP leader Y S Avinash Reddy continued to stay put in a private hospital in Kurnool for the fifth day on Tuesday while hundreds of his followers laid siege to the streets leading to the hospital in a bid to prevent his imminent arrest by the CBI.
A CBI team has been camping in Kurnool for the last two days to arrest Avinash Reddy in connection with the murder case of former MP Y S Vivekananda Reddy. But with the MP holed up in Viswa Bharati hospital, said to be owned by his close relative, the CBI team could do little but wait at the police guesthouse for the MP to come out. Local police have apparently told the CBI team that they would be of little help as hundreds of the MP’s followers have surrounded the hospital and any use of force could lead to a major law and order problem.
The YSRCP MP went into the hospital on May 19, the day he was supposed to appear before the CBI team in Hyderabad for questioning, to look after his ailing mother YS Lakshmi, who is undergoing treatment. Since then, he has not ventured out while his followers have gathered in strength and blocked the street leading to the hospital. Sensing a law and order problem, the police blocked the area and did not allow even local residents and traders for the first two days.
There have been incidents of high voltage drama involving arrests of politicians in Telugu states, but this is the first time in recent memory that sleuths of India’s premier investigation agency have been kept at bay by sheer display of muscle power of the followers of a leader.
According to sources, the Kadapa MP is holding closed door meetings with his loyalists and monitoring the developments, including his bail plea hearing in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The Kadapa MP was said to be heading to the CBI office on May 19 when he received a call about his mother’s health. Though he sought time to appear before the CBI, the agency took serious note of his three missed appearances between May 16 and 22, and sent a team to Kurnool to take him into custody for questioning.
