Colors channel is known for entertaining the audience with fantasy-drama stories. Standing by its legacy, the channel is all set to introduce another fantasy drama, Bekaboo, starring Shalin Bhanot, Eisha Singh and Monalisa. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Monalisa talked about the show and other aspects of her life. Here’s the excerpt:

EXCLUSIVE: Bekaboo star Monalisa recalls “stressful” days of her career; credits Bhojpuri industry and TV for making her a “pan-India” star

How would you describe your journey as an actor?

It is a very long and stressful journey with a lot of ups and downs. Starting from Bengal, I was very young, a 16-year-old girl, when I decided to start working. But the Bengal entertainment industry never accepted me. After doing a couple of item songs, I thought of coming to Mumbai. After coming here, I did a few small-budget Hindi films.

After that, the Bhojpuri industry gave me the break and it was indeed the turning point of my career. After that, I started getting good offers. Finally, I received appreciation and love from the audience. I did numerous films from 2007 to 2016 and became a regional star. Because of that, I was approached for Bigg Boss. The show also gave me name and fame. So given all these, my journey has been good. Though there were struggles, something good came along with every hurdle. For example, Bigg Boss gave me pan-India fame. Then fiction shows were offered to me, and I started working in the TV industry. So If I have to analyse my career graph, it has moved in an upward direction only.

How did Star Plus’ Nazar changed your career graph?

I was trying to get into the TV industry for a very long time but in vain. Then Nazar happened. You know, there is an old saying, which goes – you get what is destined at the right time. Nazar allowed me to do something different from what I had already done in the regional zone. It allowed me to show my acting skills for a negative role. My character had multiple layers and shades.

What is your thought on Bekaboo?

I am very excited as I am getting something different to do. For an actor, there is no bigger blessing than that. When the audience will watch me perform then only they will understand what is different this time. From looks to my walk, everything is different. So I am very happy.

What is the contribution of TV to your career?

The TV industry brought a different phase in my career. It marked my journey from a regional star to a pan-India star. Not only in India, but people in foreign countries also recognise me. I get numerous messages on social media. TV and all these streaming platforms where these shows are streamed are no less than a boon for me. You can call it a ‘life-changing game’. I am very thankful to TV for that.

What has been the most rewarding experience of your acting career so far?

Audience’s love! Without that, I wouldn’t have survived so long. I know lots of aspiring actors, who shifted to Mumbai from Kolkata but went back. However, in my case, the audience keeps showering love on me. So that’s my biggest rewarding experience.
