MUMBAI: The CBI questioned former NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede for five hours on Sunday, in the corruption-extortion case connected to October 2021 Cordelia cruise drug bust case involving actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan. The Bombay high court has scheduled to hear Wankhede’s plea challenging the CBI FIR on Monday and has restrained the CBI from taking any “coercive action” against him till then.

In his plea before a vacation bench of the high court, Wankhede urged the court to quash the CBI FIR, citing several documents to claim that no bribe demand was made, including an additive filed by Aryan Khan before the high court while he was in jail custody in October 2021.
Just after Aryan’s arrest, one of the case witness Prabhakar Sail, through an affidavit, claimed that Rs 25 crore was demanded from Shah Rukh Khan for protecting Aryan in the case and that he had collected Rs 50 lakh of the demanded money before Aryan’s arrest in the case on the instruction of his boss Kiran Gosavi, another witness in the cruise drug bust case. Sail said he heard Gosavi discussing over the phone about paying part of the demanded money to Wankhede. NCP leader Nawab Malik had also raised the issue.. While Aryan was in jail, he had filed an affidavit through his lawyer before the high court stating, “Applicant has nothing to do with the allegations and counter allegations that are currently on public/social media as between the Zonal Director, Mumbai, and certain political personalities. That the applicant does not make any allegations against any individual in the prosecutions. The Applicant has no connection/concern with the said Sail… The applicant prays that his bail application be decided on merits uninfluenced by the aforesaid assertions of parties and/or counter parties.”
In his plea before the court, Wankhede contends that the CBI be directed to probe and disclose the steps taken in NCB case, which he said “will disclose” him “as an upright officer (who) had conducted a free, fair and impartial investigation in the said matter, which was tinkered with certain higher ranking officers of the NCB in New Delhi at the cost of maligning the name, image and reputation of the petitioner (Wankhede)”. Wankhede also cited NCB’s action against junior intelligence officer Sudhakar Shinde, involved in the Cruise case for compromising the investigation.
