PATNA: A 12-year-old boy was badly beaten up before being killed by allegedly drowning him in a local pond in Sitamarhi just for plucking a few ripe litchis from a tree, sending shock waves in the area. Strangely, the litchis are available for hardly Rs100-Rs150/kg in the open market right now.
Police said the victim, Deepak Kumar, along with his few friends, was playing in the fields outside Dighi village under Bathnaha police station area Saturday evening when they got tempted by the juicy pink litchis hanging from the branches and stealthily climbed on the tree.
Even as they were engrossed in plucking the litchis to savour them, the owner of the tree reached there. Seeing him coming to the garden, the other children fled the scene but Deepak and one Guddu Kumar were caught by the owner, identified as Maqbul Baitha, police said.
“We have received the complaint that the children were badly beaten up before being thrown into the pond. One of them died while other sustained grievous injuries and is battling for life at a local hospital,” a senior cop at the Bathnaha police station said over phone on Sunday. The official, who didn’t wish to be identified, said the accused had been absconding after the incident. “We are conducting raids to nab him and he will be caught soon,” the official said.
Sitamarhi SP Manoj Kumar Tiwari said an FIR had been registered against the accused and further investigation was on. “We are investigating the case and action will be taken based on evidence. Right now, he is absconding,” the SP said.
The victim family members told the police that the children were badly thrashed in a locked room and then they were thrown into a local pond as a result of which one died while the other was battling for life.
“My child had gone out to play in the field and might have plucked a few litchis. For this, he was caught and killed,” the victim’s mother, Sunita Devi, said, wailing inconsolably.
Such incidents are quite common in Bihar. Earlier in June 2018, a 12-year-old boy was shot in his head allegedly for plucking mangoes from an orchard in Khagaria district.
Even more horrible incident was reported in December 2006 when a hungry Dalit girl had the fingers of her right hand chopped off by the landowner for taking spinach leaves from his field.
