JAIPUR: In a much anticipated move, CM Ashok Gehlot announced the creation of 19 new districts, including newly carved ones following the reshaping of the existing Jaipur and Jodhpur districts, on Friday.
The announcement was made during the CM’s reply to the Budget debate in the assembly. The CM also declared adding three new administrative divisions – Sikar, Banswara and Pali – to the list of existing seven. The move is being seen as a shot in the arm for the Congress party months before the assembly elections this year.
With 50 districts, Rajasthan now has the third highest number of districts in the country after Uttar Pradesh (71) and Madhya Pradesh (53). In terms of population, the state is seventh. The announcement, coming just six days after Gehlot extended the tenure of the Ram Lubhaya Committee, which was tasked with the creation of new districts, surprised everyone.
“The CM extended the tenure of the Lubhaya Committee and stated that there was a delay in receiving its report. It is hard to understand how the 19 districts have now been announced without receiving the report,” deputy leader of the opposition Rajendra Rathore said.

CM Gehlot announces formation of 19 new districts in Rajasthan

“The CM extended the tenure of the Lubhaya Committee and stated that there was a delay in receiving its report. It is hard to understand how the 19 districts have now been announced without receiving the report,” deputy leader of the opposition Rajendra Rathore said.
The present Jaipur district has been divided into four new districts – Jaipur North, Jaipur South, Dudu and Kotputli-Behror. The CM’s bastion of Jodhpur has been reshaped into three districts – Jodhpur East, Jodhpur West and Phalodi.
Deteriorating law and order was also an element behind the downsizing of giant districts. Interestingly, there was no popular demand for the creation of Jaipur North and South or Jodhpur East and West as separate districts. Ajmer district has been divided into Ajmer, Kekri, and Beawar districts. Of all the newly created districts, the demand for Beawar is 40 years old. Almost two to three generations of Beawar have been consistently demanding the creation of a district.

In which district will the state capital fall?

Kekri was a big surprise as local MLA Raghu Sharma had raised the demand only recently.
The demand to separate Balotra from Barmer as a separate district, too, was a long pending one. Local MLA Madan Prajapat had given up wearing footwear in May last year and gone barefoot as a mark of protest until the demand was met.
Gehlot made a special mention of Prajapat in his speech, saying that the MLA will now be able to wear slippers.
The decision to create new districts and divisions has political undertones. The creation of Banswara as a division and Salumber as a district is targeted at wooing tribal communities that voted for BJP in the assembly election in neighbouring Gujarat last year.
The new districts of Deeg (Bharatpur) and Khairthal (Alwar) and Sikar as a division are purely to manage law and order and restore the people’s faith in the government.
